Flash

Have you seen people in stadiums taking pictures? I always wonder what they think by leaving the camera flash on. Do they really think that the flash will light up the whole stadium? The point is that most of them are using "Point and Shot" digital cameras. These cameras automatically change ISO (which controls digital camera sensitivity to light) and aperture ( which controls the amount of light that reaches the camera) settings and make the shutter speed faster. So if your flash can not brighten up the scene, you will get a dark photo. That's why when you take a picture during a cloudy day and leave your flasher on, your photo looks like a photo taken during the night.
